Care Instructions

Big Cooler Lunch Bag
Machine wash separately on a cold, delicate cycle. Regular washing will help prolong the life of the bag, though day-to-day cleaning can be easily done with a damp cloth. Stand upright and allow to dry completely before next use.

Big Chill Pack
The Big Chill Pack prefers to keep its fabric cover on while in use to reduce condensation and protect your lunch bag. When freezing, remove the cover and lay the pack flat. Once frozen, simply pop the cover back on before use. The cover is machine washable — wash as needed and hang out to dry.

Mould Prevention Instructions

Spencil made a conscious decision not to use anti-mould coatings on products, as available coatings can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Lunch bags used with ice packs naturally create moisture, and when combined with heat and humidity — especially in Australia — this can encourage mould growth. By following a few simple care steps, you can help reduce the likelihood of mould forming in your lunch bag.

Freeze the chill pack without its cover:

The black outer pouch supplied with the Chill Pack is designed to help reduce the moisture naturally created by the frozen gel pack. To minimise condensation inside the lunch bag, freeze the inner silver gel pack flat and without the black cover.

Make sure the cover is completely dry before placing it back onto the frozen pack and into the lunch bag. Wash the black outer cover regularly in warm, soapy water (or occasionally in the washing machine). For extra freshness, wipe it thoroughly with vinegar, then allow it to dry completely — preferably overnight — before reuse.

Wash your bag:

At the end of each day, empty the lunch bag as soon as possible once kids are home from school. Shake out any crumbs or food scraps, then wipe the inside and outside with a damp cloth and a splash of vinegar.

Lunch bags can be machine washed occasionally (not daily) on a gentle cycle, washed on their own. Adding a cup of white vinegar to the wash can help eliminate any mould spores that may have developed.

For extra protection — or if mould is already visible — soak the lunch bag in a bucket of water with one cup of vinegar for at least one hour. After soaking, rinse thoroughly or run it through a gentle machine wash with additional vinegar or your regular detergent.

Please note: Lunch bags made from recycled plastics should be spot cleaned only using a damp cloth or gentle sponge. If a deeper clean is needed, continue spot cleaning — do not machine wash these products.

Dry it out completely:

Drying your lunch bag thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before its next use is the most important step in preventing mould.

After your daily wipe-down, leave the bag open and air it on a drying rack or clothesline each night, either hanging or standing on one end. Make sure there’s plenty of airflow around the bag.

For best results, dry the lunch bag outdoors whenever possible — ideally in the sun, with the printed side facing sunlight.

Give it some sun:

After thoroughly washing your lunch bag, the final and most effective defence against mould is the sun — nature’s most powerful mould prevention and removal tool.

Whenever possible, dry both your lunch bag and the black Chill Pack cover in direct sunlight. Position the bag so all printed sides face the sun, either pegged to a clothesline or placed upside down on a drying rack.

Keep in mind that the inner padding can take longer to dry than the visible lining and outer fabric. An overnight dry is strongly recommended before placing the bag back into the confined space of a backpack for the day.
